Abstract

Psychologically studying the relationship between religous and mental health, the author of this article comes to the conclusion that it is an ambiguous one. Religious faith frees from existential anxiety. The faithfull take less thoughts for their worldly goods and less believe in social conventions. But at the same time faith can also mean limitation and the social norms in a religious group can seize an individual believer to the throat.  Faith offers sense and meaning, but it also happens that faith hinders reflection regarding ideas and values holded by the believers. Religion can be to a person’s advantage in all the  domains of life, on the condition that room is made for personal needs and desires as well as for doubt. So the sense giving system that makes reality meaningful, is complete. One is able to put her or his own life into a more comprehensive whole.  This kind of faith doesn’t consider a certain part of one’s personality as absolute, but takes into account the own identity, and grows according to the development of the whole person.
