Abstract

Heidegger refuses humanism that sees man as having a fixed, stable, unchanging essence or structure. This humanism is basically founded on metaphysics which is rooted back to Plato who according to Heidegger has triggered the forgetfulness of Being in the history of philosophy. Metaphysics has ignored the ontological difference between Being and beings. This has resulted in subjectism that perceives everything on the basis of subject-object framework. Subject dominates object.
To Heidegger, the essence of man, if we should use the word “essence”, should be viewed in his relation with Being. Man is defined as Dasein, the clearing site of Being. As Dasein, man’s task is to become the Shepherd of beings, as opposed to the Lord of beings, that is by waiting in silence and by letting beings be. The disclosedness of Being is no longer dependent on man’s reason, willingness or capabilities. It is Ereignis, not man, that “enables” this disclosedness by appropriating Being and man. It is a goodbye to philosophy of willing.
