Beberapa Data Etnografis Manusia dan Pulau Kimaam, di Pantai Selatan Papua

Abstract

This article describes some ethnographic data about people and island of Kimaam, which is situated on south coast of Papua. The Kimaam people lived for centuries in an unique condition, namely in the midst of water and muddy area. They had to create islands before building houses and gardens. They faced two main problems, namely: shortage of fresh water and dry ground, which hindered them from further development. This indigenous people had been removed by the former Dutch colonial government and the Catholic Church, after waiting for quite long time, to higher land along side Marianna Street, but this attempt was unsuccesfull, because they were not accustomed to high land agriculture system. They felt unhappy and moved back to their old villages
