Abstract

Education is a responsibility shared by family, society and government. The primary duty of education, however, lies on the family. The families of Marind at Wendu village are aware of the importance of education, yet this is not reflected in their everyday life.

Formal education was first entroduced into Marind’s community during Dutch period c.a 1922. However until present time it has not been successful in changing the community’s way of life and its point of view. They remain food gatherers. At the first place education for Marind’s people is an aid for literacy, i.e. to be able to read, to write, to count, and to learn Bahasa Indonesia, and by means of which they get civilized; and this was the intention of the Dutch with beschaving school. The challenge now is to lead it toward the national goals of education, that is, to bring children to be knowledgeable; and toward Christian educational objectives, that is, to develop children’s ethical, physical, and intellectual talents harmoniously.
