Abstract

Social drama, a term coined by Victor W. Turner, describes society as a dialectical process between community and structure, by which society is not regarded as a rigid system but a process of bridging the ideal values lived in community, viz., equality, brotherhood and/or sisterhood, unselfishness, undifferentiatedness, in the one side, and actually social life in which man/woman plays different roles and stands in varied positions, on the other side. Turner shows that social drama parallels to van Gennep’s rites of passage, both of which have three main phases: separation, margin (or limen/liminal, signifying "threshold"), and aggregation or schism. Social drama is not only a cultural manifestation of societies, it can be found also in the church history. This article presents the formation of the johanine church in the first and second century and the reception of the apostolic church of it as a good example of social drama
