Abstract

As a technical term springing in the late fifties, theology of history searches to understand relationship between the world and God, the natural and the supernatural, world history and salvation-history with the purpose of breaking up a dullness in theology that satisfies herself with positive facts of the history of theology and ecclesial announcements at the price of staying away from speculative reflection. Rahner and von Balthasar, despite of their different approach and model in doing theology, are pioneers in Catholic theology of history and contribute significant theologumena in braiding the natural and the supernatural: Rahner does it with his supernatural existential and von Balthasar with his tendentia naturalis in gratiam and analogia entis; the former takes transendental analysis of dynamism of human being and the latter analysis of certain figures in philosophy and literature to disclose fundamental human conduct toward God and himself. In the eyes of von Balthasar the modern man conduct is typified in the figure of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard; the one represents an attitude of modern man who says “Yes” to himself, and “No” to God; and the other “Yes” to God, but “No” to himself.
