Abstract

In the 1990s, 'community' and communitarian ideas became the slogan under which several centre-left politicians base their strategy to seize political power. Communitarian political thought was first a critical reaction to Rawlsian liberal philosophy. Authors such as Charles Taylor, Michael Walzer, Alasdair MacIntyre, Michael Sandel, amongst many others, criticized the individualist and atomistic premises of procedural liberalism developed by John Rawls and some of his followers, and argued instead that individuals are socially embedded. Communitarianism concerns more with forwarding a blueprint to solve problems of contemporary societies and contains prescriptions for how to create the "good society". With the communitarian diagnoses in his hands, Amitai Etzioni prepares a road to the good society proposing community as a weaving of bond of shared values and goals, moral culture, service learning, balanced right-responsability, and balanced autonomy-order.
